Supreme Court Tightens Watch on NEET Reforms
The Supreme Court wants the government to make changes after the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The Supreme Court is going to keep an eye on what the government does.
The Supreme Court had a hearing on July 24. During this hearing the Supreme Court asked for information about plans to make NEET a computer-based exam. The Supreme Court also wants to know how the government will keep the data safe.
The government told the Supreme Court that it is working on a plan. The government asked for time to do this. The Supreme Court will have another hearing, on August 3. The NEET-UG 2026 paper leak is an issue and the Supreme Court wants to see what the government will do about it.
Supreme Court Seeks Long-Term NEET Changes
The Supreme Court is looking at ways to stop people from failing the test in the future. They want the government to make the system better and think about using computers for the tests. The court is also worried about keeping all the information safe on computers.
While taking tests on the computer might stop people from cheating by getting the questions of time it also brings up concerns, about people hacking into the system and whether we have the right equipment and if it will work properly. This means we need to come up with a plan to fix all these problems for the long term and that plan has to be really good. The NEET test is very important so we need to make sure we get this right.
What Happened in NEET-UG 2026?
NEET-UG is India’s main medical entrance exam. The May 3, 2026 test was cancelled after a paper leak. A CBI probe followed, and a retest was held on June 21 with stricter rules. While admissions resumed, concerns remain about how the leak occurred and whether future exams can be secured.
Court Had Earlier Questioned the NTA
Earlier the Supreme Court had already shown worry about NEET-UG 2026. In May it sent notices to the Centre, the Education Ministry and the NTA. The court asked about delays, in setting up a monitoring committee. Petitions also asked for changing the structure of the NTA. Now the court wants clear progress instead of more promises.
Why Computer-Based NEET Is Being Discussed
A computer-based exam is a way to cut down on paper work and make things more secure. When you do an exam on a computer the questions can be. They can be in different formats, which makes it harder for people to cheat.
There are still some problems to solve. If you want to give a lot of people a computer-based exam you need to have computers and internet that always work especially in smaller towns. The people in charge have to make sure that the exam is safe, from hackers and that the computers do not break down. So the Supreme Court has said that they want to see a plan before they start using computer-based exams. Could Online Testing Prevent Every Leak?
Probably not. No exam format is fully secure. Paper tests risk leaks during printing or transport, while computer-based exams face hacking or insider threats. A reliable system needs multiple safeguards, including strict access controls, audits, encryption, monitoring and clear accountability. The Supreme Court’s focus is on building a consistent, rule-based system rather than relying on temporary fixes or single solutions.
What Happens Next?
The Supreme Court will look at this matter again on August 3. On this day the government is supposed to tell the court about the changes it wants to make.
Students need to know that the court has not said that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET has to be on computers from on. The court just wants the government to say what it is planning to do and how it can make sure this change is safe.
The government has to give the court an answer and the court has to say what to do next. Until then we do not know for sure what will happen with the exam format, in the future. The future of the exam is still not decided.
